Oncologist with a patient

Few families have escaped the feeling of devastation caused by the news of cancer, but cancer research has made some enormous strides in the treatment of cancer as well as the side effects from medicine.

Chemotherapy Close-to-Home

Patients are often relieved to find out they can receive chemotherapy treatments close to home where they know the people who will minister to their needs, and they are familiar with the surroundings. Receiving chemotherapy locally is a saving for the patient in terms of time and effort, because it is easier to find a ride to the treatment location.

What is Chemotherapy?

Chemotherapy involves administering drugs at intervals determined by the patient's oncologist. The goal is to destroy or stop the growth of cancer cells. The goal of chemotherapy is to:

  • Cure cancer
  • Keep the cancer from spreading
  • Slow the cancer's growth
  • Kill cancer cells that may have spread to other parts of the body from the original tumor
  • Relieve symptoms that may be caused by the cancer

First Care's Team

A comprehensive chemotherapy program is available at First Care Medical Services in Fosston. The medical staff at First Care works closely with surgeons and oncologists to form a team of professionals who work together to find and administer the right treatment for cancer patients. The patient's progress is communicated routinely to his/her physician and oncologist, and the side effects are controlled promptly. Recent advancements in medicines have made the side effects much easier to control.

Since chemotherapy is usually given on an outpatient basis, patients are most appreciative that they don't need to ride long distances in a car or bus. The comfort and familiarity of the local health care facility and the familiar faces close-to-home aid in the healing process. Lab, X-ray, CT scans, and Ultrasounds are available for patients' convenience. When scheduling treatment, the First Care staff will work together with patient and family to accommodate their busy schedules.

Patient education and family support are important components of this program, and patients and families are given detailed information about chemotherapy, its potential side effects, and what to do about them. The First Care Medical Services staff is available to answer any questions from patients and family.
